The First Day

P9070113The Herons had a very successful first day.  The first few hours of a new year always seem horribly quiet as students get a feel for each other and their new teachers.  I always find myself filling the quiet with nervous check ins, "How are you?"  "Doing O.K.?"  Elizabeth and I were both surprised when we found ourselves in a room full of quietly reading kids at 8:40 this morning.  That's one of the wonders of having a mixed age classroom — the routine and expectations are passed on almost subconsciously.

Of course, the insecure quiet never lasts, as the second picture in this set illustrates.  The Herons will be a force to be reckoned with in no time at all.

I hope your Heron arrived home happy and tired.  I know I did. MM
