Bustling, excitement, and three galaxies – this morning the 4th graders came in ready to get going on their space week work. They made signs for our galaxies, Tadpole Galaxy (aka the Robins), Whirlpool Galaxy (aka the Kestrels), and Black Eye Galaxy (aka the Herons). They found their hooks for the week in their home galaxy, and settled in with space shares, questions, and books. After morning meetings each galaxy spent the morning creating and experimenting with two very different types of rockets. (see the video and pictures of some balloon rockets below). After an exciting game of star dodge, recess, and lunch, the astronauts reformed into their "solar systems" (three groups of 10). The solar systems rotated through our afternoon activities: planet making, living and eating like astronauts, and making minibooks about ancient astronomers to Galileo (why did people think everything revolved around the earth?) Suddenly, it was time to go. Today felt like a whirlwind, but it was an enthusiastic one. Tomorrow our rockets fly further as we explore the solar system: orbits, distances, and how to become travel agents advertising other plants. -ET
