Today I had four possible blogs — the importance of understanding the fundamentals of multiplication as one learns an algorithm (I'm teaching it in foundation math right now), the fun we had constructing three dimensional shapes from nets (and challenge that this kind of spacial work provides for some kids who quickly get other topics), the thrill of setting up chairs (I kid you not), and finally the power of learning through exploration (which we did as we taught each other the Scratch computer programming language today.)
I'll write about everything, don't worry. But there is something more pressing. We need your help. I really think our school is special — I know my sons are having experiences in their classrooms like your children have in mine. 100% of parents reported last year that their kids are happy at Prairie Creek. But in recent years, our board has had to make a lot of hard, hard financial decisions. We're making it but there aren't any extras, the staff has had a pay freeze fo three years, arts residencies haven't been an option, and resources for classrooms have been more limited.
If you can help us financially by donating for Give to the Max day, please do. Every donation helps. I'm planning on making a gift tomorrow (Wednesday) and then setting up a monthly donation – $1 per day per kid. Tonight's dinner conversation was filled with talk of the Crane's geology fair, the penny collection, pajama day, forts stores, and plans for the school day tomorrow (my kindergartener is going to start a "Doodle Club.") One dollar seems like a bargain.
So many of you give so much of your time and talents already. As I visited with people at our culminating event I was struck by what you bring to the school — the support you give your children and the teachers. I wish that asking for financial support was unnecessary. But those aren't the times we live in. The Herons families are leaders in the school and I am so grateful for all that you contribute. Thank you.
You can contribute by going to the Prairie Creek website and clicking on the "donate" button.
