Honoring Student Voice

I was proud of the students who left classes today to honor the seventeen Florida students who were killed a month ago. These kids are using their voice to affect change – something I hope that our students are learning to do in their own way during their time at Prairie Creek.  We need kids who speak up and speak out when they see an injustice.

I was struck by a grim Fermi problem when I heard about this protest.  How long would they have to walk out to honor everyone who had been killed in a school since Columbine (which happened the first year I was a teacher)?  The answer was four hours and forty-three minutes.

One can understand why these students have said, "Enough."  They are urging action from the adults in their lives – us.

I don't know the answer to keeping our schools safe, but I want to honor the call to action and encourage you to as well.  Research.  Converse.  Act.  Reach out to your local, state and national representatives and tell them what you think they should do.  They are waiting for our directive.  Regardless of what action you think should be taken, it's time to act.
