On Friday, the Herons celebrated the publication of our literary magazine, The Heron. Every student
successfully published a piece of writing. This is quite an accomplishment. Students selected a piece and revised it based on their peers' feedback. Then they edited the piece, considering paragraphing, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. Students (and adult typists — thank you volunteers!) type the work in and edit one more time. I then provided a teacher edit. I use Google Drive's tools to do this, often supplying grammatical mini lessons about commas, quotation marks and run-on sentences as I comment. Students review and learn from my edits. Then they choose their fonts and illustrate their work.
Whew! On Friday we enjoyed tea, cookies and clementines as we read our work on the open mic. Simon and Colleen stopped by to enjoy the festivities, too. Hopefully you had a chance to check out the literary magazine, too.
On Thursday, we celebrated GiveMN by dressing up in fall colors. The Herons had a lot of fun — and I especially enjoyed the antics during an especially creative round of one of our favorite games, "Park Bench." Ask your Heron for more details.
