This afternoon we had Earthworks which was an environmental art class. We began with a spirited and very, very interesting conversation about what "art" was. Many students felt it was something, anything that had been made. Others felt that it had to be made as "art" purposefully. Perhaps most contentious was the debate over whether a beautiful natural object, such as a sunset, was in itself art. As the adults, we took the role of Socrates, simply asking questions to help students clarify their thinking. The debate spilled over into dinner and even into our evening wrap up. Perhaps it will grace your dinner table, too.
Students then looked at some of the work of Andy Goldsworthy. We then went out to create our own work. Along the way, we saw a doe and two fawns and we sat transfixed for five minutes as they wandered up the hillside above us.
The Kestrels and Robins stopped at Chickadee Landing this afternoon. The chickadees fly down and eat off of your hat or hand — it's an amazing experience. Unfortunately, the chickadees were turning for the night so we're going to try again in the morning when they're nice and hungry. This time, all of us are going to go. -MMM
